
Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan was ordained auxiliary bishop of Brooklyn in 1980 and appointed vicar for human services. He is the past chair of the Catholic Health Association Board of Trustees and the past president of Catholic Charities USA. He is a member of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and has served on various committees, including Mayor Koch’s Commission 2000 on the Future of New York City. Bishop Sullivan also served on the Cadre Committee, which produced the visionary document "Toward a Renewed Catholic Charities," and on the ad hoc committee that produced a pastoral letter on charity, "In All Things Charity: A Pastoral Challenge for the New Millennium," adopted by the full body of bishops at their general meeting in November 1999. He holds master’s degrees in public administration from New York University and in social work from Fordham University.
