Milbank Quarterly Webinar: Using the New US State Policy Index for Population Health Research

Topic:
State Policy Capacity

Working-age mortality rates are rising and vary widely by state. A growing body of evidence suggests that polarized state policy environments may contribute to these trends.

This Milbank Quarterly webinar featured Jennifer Karas Montez, PhD, and Iliya Gutin, PhD, of Syracuse University, two of the creators (with Shannon Monnat) of the State Policies and Politics Database (SPPD) State Policy Index, a tool for investigating the links between state-level policies and mortality trends. Karas Montez and Gutin discussed the tool and its application to trends in population mental health.

Alan B. Cohen, ScD, Editor of The Milbank Quarterly, moderated the discussion with the authors, and Scott Burris, JD, of Temple University, who discussed the uses of state-level indices in population health research.
