On July 9, 2026, the Common Health Coalition and the Milbank Memorial Fund hosted a webinar about the health and economic impacts of extreme heat — and how to improve preparedness for heat emergencies.
Panelists, including researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Paul Petersen of the Tennessee Department of Health, and Vicki Sakata, MD, senior medical advisor for Northwest Healthcare Response Network, discussed the findings of a new modeling study, More Illness, Greater Cost Spotlight Brief: Heat Emergencies, and what they mean for communities across the country.
The webinar highlighted practical actions that public health leaders, health care organizations, employers, and policymakers can take to reduce the human and economic toll of heat emergencies and build capabilities for responding to all public health threats.
