Community Hospitals at a Crossroads: Findings from an Examination of the Massachusetts Health Care System

Date: December 2016

Author: Harriette Chandler — Majority Leader, Massachusetts Senate, MA

Resource type: Report

Topics: Hospital System, Public Health, Quality and Efficiency

Looking at community hospitals as a group reveals the distinct position these hospitals play in the market compared to most AMCs and teaching hospitals, but they face a number of challenges.  Community hospitals generally provide high quality health care, at lower costs, across a wide geographic distribution.  However, this report highlights challenges such as drivers of patient perceptions of quality, increased consolidation leading to more referrals for AMCs and teaching hospitals, difference in prices from payers, and greater provision of low margin services.
