Medical Director, Communicable Diseases, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
Tristan McPherson, MD, serves as Medical Director of the Bureau of Communicable Diseases at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. He oversees teams dedicated to drug-resistant infections, bioterrorism, emerging and high-consequence pathogens, outbreak readiness and response, and clinician outreach and engagement. He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee and completed a combined residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, followed by an infectious diseases fellowship at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. After the fellowship, he joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Epidemic Intelligence Service and was assigned to the Chicago Department of Public Health’s Communicable Disease Program, where he developed expertise in applied epidemiology, disease surveillance, infection prevention and control, and outbreak response. As faculty at New York University’s Division of Infectious Diseases and Immunology, he supports learners pursuing careers in health care epidemiology and public health.
