State Representative, Mississippi
Representative Timaka James-Jones, a lifelong resident of Belzoni, Mississippi, was elected as the first African-American Representative of the 51st District of the State of Mississippi in November 2023. She currently serves as a member of several committees in the legislature, including Apportionment and Elections, Municipalities, Public Property, Energy, County Affairs, and Tourism. She has been honored as one of Mississippi’s Top 50 Leaders in Government and recognized as one of the Superwomen in State Government. During her first year in the Mississippi legislature, Timaka proposed an amendment to eliminate separate absentee ballot applications, which has significantly increased the number of absentee ballots accepted in the Mississippi voting process.
Timaka has served in public office since 1999, when she was elected the first African-American woman Justice Court Judge of Humphreys County, Mississippi. In 2003, she was elected as the first African-American woman Circuit Court Clerk & County Registrar. Timaka is a member of the Mississippi Democratic & Minority Black Caucus.
