Maria has helped develop 50-state assessments and other analyses of the health care provided to people incarcerated in prisons and jails or transitioning back into the community.

Before coming to Pew, Maria held numerous positions in the health care field. At the National Governors Association, Maria advised states on implementation of the Affordable Care Act and conducted research in health workforce planning and professional scope of practice laws. Maria also served as a health policy director for the commonwealth of Massachusetts. Following Maria’s government service, Maria launched a managed care insurance program for newly insured individuals. Maria holds a bachelor’s degree in history from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a master’s in community health administration from Long Island University.
