Catherine E. Woteki is Dean of the College of Agriculture and Director of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station at Iowa State University. She received a B.S. degree in biology and chemistry from Mary Washington College (1969), and M.S. (1971) and Ph.D. (1974) degrees in human nutrition from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Her research interests include food safety and nutrition policy, chronic disease prevention, and population health surveillance and monitoring. Prior to joining Iowa State, Woteki was a Senior Research Scientist with the College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park, and Professor of Nutrition and Food Safety at the University of Nebraska. She served from August 1997 until January 2001 as the first Under Secretary for Food Safety in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and was for two years Deputy Under Secretary for Research, Education, and Economics at the USDA. She was Deputy Associate Director for Science in the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy. Woteki is a registered dietitian and a member of the Institute of Medicine. November 2003
