The Milbank Memorial Fund acknowledges with respect and gratitude the service of its leaders since 1905: the founders of the Fund, the presiding officers and members of the Board of Directors, chief executives, and the members of its Technical and Editorial Boards. We list these persons in the role (or roles) they served and under subheads that divide the history of the Fund into periods defined by significant events. These historical periods are:
1905–1920
Founding the Fund and Articulating Its Mission
1921–1935
The Fund’s Innovative Program and Publications and Growing Reputation
1936–1960
The Fund Is Stable and Respected and Maintains Its Founding Mission
1961–1989
The Fund Retreats from Informing Policy but Has Influential Fellowship Programs and the Repute of The Milbank Quarterly Increases
1990–
Return to the Mission of Informing Health Policy While Maintaining Excellence in Publications
Note that (1) leaders whose service spanned more than one historical period are listed in the period of their appointment but with their complete years of service; and (2) because the titles of presiding officers of the Board and of chief executives have evolved, each of them is listed with his or her title at the time of appointment.

The Technical Board, established in 1922, initially advised the staff and the Board about projects in two cities and a mainly rural county in New York State. These projects demonstrated how recent scientific findings about preventing and treating disease could be applied by public health agencies and their allies in philanthropy. The members of the Technical Board since its inception have been distinguished researchers, clinicians, and policymakers and have guided and advised the President and Board of Directors on issues and trends in health systems and population health. They are listed alphabetically within each time period. Their titles and affiliations at the time of their appointment as well as during their service to the Fund are also listed if they are available in the records of the Fund or by searching the Internet.
