Medicaid is the largest payer for mental health and substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and recovery supports in the United States. Although Medicaid innovations have expanded access to treatment and improved care quality, challenges remain.

A Milbank Quarterly webinar focused on two articles on Medicaid’s role in mental health and SUD from our special issue, Mental Health and Substance Use Challenges Facing the United States: What Can State Policymakers Do? The issue’s co-editor, Beth McGinty of Weill Cornell Medical College, moderated a discussion with the authors and a state official from North Carolina.
