State Senator, Illinois
Graciela Guzmán (she/her/ella) serves as Senator for Illinois’ 20th District, representing communities across northwest Chicago. Her passion for health care and community is derived from her family’s early experiences immigrating to the United States to escape the Salvadoran Civil War. Before her election, Graciela organized policy campaigns around health care, child welfare, economic justice, and immigration. Most notably, she helped make Illinois the first state in the nation to expand health care coverage to low-income seniors regardless of their immigration status. She also led health care defense efforts at Protect Our Care Illinois and enrolled community members in the Affordable Care Act coverage. She has been a part of organizing efforts to support neighbors impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and organizing resources for newcomer immigrant families. She graduated from Grinnell College in 2011 with a degree in anthropology and sits on their Board of Trustees.
