Peter Johnson

Peter Johnson, CNM, PhD, PACNM, FAAN, president of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, is a certified nurse-midwife, educational expert and global health strategist with over 40 years of professional experience. As the director of global learning and chief nursing and midwifery officer at Jhpiego, an international NGO affiliated with Johns Hopkins University, Peter has worked in over 40 countries in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. In these roles, he actively collaborated with the World Health Organization, United Nations agencies, international and regional donors, professional associations and ministries of health on issues related to education, professional training, and health workforce regulations. Recently he returned to work following a brief retirement in which he hiked the Appalachian Trail with his wife, Tina, and dog Tiki. He is currently focused on expanding and supporting the midwifery workforce. Peter is also a clinical professor at the University of Buffalo, readying a midwifery education program that will enroll its first cohort in January 2027.
