Iliya Gutin is a research assistant professor and senior research associate in the Center for Policy Research at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He is a social demographer and medical sociologist who studies the individual, institutional, and contextual determinants of morbidity and mortality — including how state policy contexts and broader sociopolitical environments shape working-age health and life expectancy — as well as how health itself is conceptualized and measured. He previously served as a program officer with the Committee on Population at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, and was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Texas at Austin. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a BA in Sociology from the University of Chicago.
