Chief Medical Officer, Kansas Department of Health and Environment
Dereck Totten, MD, MPH, FAAFP, serves as Chief Medical Officer for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, where he provides medical leadership to advance the health of Kansans through evidence-based policy, collaboration, and public health innovation. A lifelong Kansan, he continues practicing full-scope family medicine in rural Colby, Kansas, including surgical obstetrics, and serves as medical director of a rural health clinic. Previously, he served as Thomas County Health Officer and helped develop a regional maternal-fetal education program. Dereck has served on the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors, the Kansas Board of Healing Arts Committee, and the panel that updated the Kansas Crisis Standards of Care. He earned his medical degree and Master of Public Health from the University of Kansas, completed residency at Smoky Hill Family Medicine, and was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
