Milbank Memorial Fund Announces Search for Editor of The Milbank Quarterly

The Milbank Memorial Fund is seeking a new Editor for The Milbank Quarterly, one of the nation’s oldest and most distinguished multidisciplinary journals of population health and health policy. This is a unique opportunity to guide the publication of new research that informs and helps improve the health of populations in the United States and internationally.

Milbank Quarterly Description

Continuously published since 1923, The Milbank Quarterly features peer-reviewed original research, policy review, and analysis from academics, clinicians, and policymakers. With its multidisciplinary approach and commitment to applying the best empirical research to practical policymaking, the Quarterly offers in-depth assessments of the social, economic, historical, legal, and ethical dimensions of health and health care policy. According to the Institute for Scientific Information, the Quarterly is consistently among the top three for “impact factor” (based on citations of published articles) of 89 journals in Health Care Sciences & Services and of 77 journals in Health Policy & Services since 2003. An editorially independent, fully funded program of the Milbank Memorial Fund, the Quarterly is published by John Wiley & Sons, which also manages subscriptions.

Position Summary

The Editor, reporting to the President of the Fund, is responsible for the editorial direction of the Quarterly and the quality of all content published in the Quarterly. S/he will help solicit articles for the Quarterly, and oversee the initial review, peer review, and final editing processes for articles. The Editor may also wish to solicit non-peer-reviewed analysis and commentary consistent with his/her overall editorial strategy. The Editor will establish and enforce editorial standards in the Quarterly consistent with best practices in academic research, and will make decisions on placement, formatting, and publication of all Quarterly material in print and digital format.


The Editor is assisted by a full-time Managing Editor as well as the Fund’s Communications Director and administrative staff. In addition to the Quarterly’s presence on the Wiley website, the Fund also maintains a Quarterly section on its own website.

Although Fund staff are based in New York City, the Editor may be located elsewhere. The salaried position is anticipated to be a .4 full-time equivalent work commitment and options are available to employ the Editor directly or to contract with his/her sponsoring institution.
