The Use of Intensive Care: New Research Initiatives and Their Implications for National Health Policy

Research on utilization of intensive care units may be a provocative first step in guiding a transition from a medical care system based on availability to one that more explicitly recognizes patient desires, needs, and ability to benefit. New information on effectiveness, combined with a national ethical and legal climate conducive to selective admission policies, along with new financial incentives, can encourage more rational and efficient use of resources.
