Changing Concepts of Morbidity and Mortality in the Elderly Population

One of the most serious challenges facing the U.S. today is how to plan for a rapidly aging population. Despite increased speculation about how public and private institutions might respond, there is yet little agreement on the causes, dynamics, and magnitude of the phenomenon. A model of human mortality-among others-is presented to clarify the central importance of chronic disease to both the challenge and future responses.
