The Economics of Bureaucracy and the British National Health Service

The bureaucratic structure of the British National Health Service has an important impact on its performance; problems of efficiency and access cannot be alleviated by better information and analysis alone. A system of private insurance, as in the United States, falls short as a reform to involve modification of the incentives for decision-making. More constructive considerations include rewarding NHS officials for cost-savings and encouraging competition in health care provision.
