
Three decades of social experimentation in caring for the mentally ill have yielded many new programs, treatments, personnel, and facilities. Despite administrative complexities and historical divisions, alternatives are already available in general hospitals as well as in community centers. Future policies and priorities will not be clarified through recourse to unrealistic "medical models."
